My Big Campus

What does a million look like?

Have you ever counted to a million? Mr. Cooper, a teacher at Chester District Elementary School in Nova Scota, Canada, decided to try. He and his class set a goal to collect 1,000,000 plastic bread tags. He started the project in 1987, and reached his goal 23 years later, in 2010, with the help of an entire generation of students, their families, and even strangers around the world, who heard about the project and contributed their plastic bread tags.

The My Big Campus team and I had a similar goal. We wanted to see how long it would take to sign up our first million users. We started developing My Big Campus in 2009, and officially launched the site in 2010 for schools and districts using Lightspeed's web content filter. In July 2011, we opened up My Big Campus to teachers and their students everywhere.

I'm delighted to announce that we reached our goal of one million user accounts late last month. Each account was created or initiated by a verified educator. That's one million real people; no anonymous, spam, or junk accounts. One million people, in the United States and around the world, who have come to My Big Campus to join this growing, active community of K12 learners.

One million people.

That's quite a milestone, and I can't tell you how proud I am of my team, and all of you on My Big Campus, for getting us there. Amazingly enough, we're well on our way to our next million users as we add schools and districts over the summer.

My Big Campus has caught on in a big way.

What does a million look like?

It looks like me, and you, and all of us together, doing amazing things.

Thank you.
